On Friday, September 13, 2024, over 200 film lovers gathered in backyards across Maplewood, New Jersey, for a communal movie night. At 7:50 PM, everyone simultaneously hit “play” to watch the original 1988 Beetlejuice.
Maplewood’s historic theater, located in the heart of the village, has been closed since the pandemic. This Backyard Movie Night highlighted the community’s enduring passion for shared movie experiences and emphasized the urgent need for investors and local leaders to restore the theater or create an alternative venue.
I created four minutes of original pre-show content including an animated MFS logo, lava lamp effects, Beetlejuice fan art, and a slideshow about the historic theater.
