On Friday, September 13, 2024, over 200 film lovers gathered in backyards across Maplewood, New Jersey, for a communal movie night. At 7:50 PM, we all hit "play" on the original 1988 Beetlejuice.
Maplewood's historic theater, located in the heart of the village, has been closed since the pandemic. The Backyard Movie Night demonstrated that Maplewood still has a strong passion for watching movies together, and underscored the need for investors and community leaders to restore the theater or fund an alternative movie venue.
I created four minutes of original pre-show content, which included an animation of the Maplewood Film Society logo, lava lamp effects, Beetlejuice fan art, a slideshow about the historic theater, and more. Later, I exported just the animating logo for social media.
